Western hognose snake (Heterodon nasicus) Sable

Sable

The Sable is a unique variation of the Western Hognose Snake (Heterodon nasicus). Thanks to its distinctive appearance and active character, this species has remained one of the most popular snakes in the hobby. On this page you can learn more about the characteristics of the sable morph. For detailed information about care and housing, please refer to our comprehensive care sheet.

Description

Sable is a recessive mutation that increases the production of melanin as well as other chromatophores. As the animal ages, the amount of dark pigmentation continues to increase, causing some specimens to eventually become nearly solid black. This mutation also displays an increased level of iridescence compared to other morphs. Iridophores are responsible for these reflective qualities and colour reflections within the scales. The pattern remains visible but may appear less defined because of the increasing pigmentation. Sable affects both colour intensity and the reflective properties of the scales without completely removing the visible pattern.
